There’s a real Frescobaldi-fest in this two-disc recording, with over two and a half hours of toccatas, partitas and canzonas from books one and two, which date between 1615 and 1637. Yet, far from feeling an overdose of early seventeenth-century Italian-keyboard style, one is reminded of the huge diversity of melodic invention in Frescobaldi’s music, with constantly changing rhythms and meters providing endless variety for the listener.
