On this generously filled, well recorded disc, only one of the five cantatas (all written to celebrate either Reformation Day or Michaelmas) has been recorded before, and it is testament to Telemann’s prolific invention that every bar teems with vitality and joy. The disc takes its title from a compact Ein feste Berg for solo bass (the excellent Markus Flaig), but the composer’s grander side is also much in evidence: Welch Getummel erschuttert den Himmel is cast on an epic scale and makes a huge impression.
If solo singing is not entirely consistent, instrumental and choral contributions are second to none. …
