An efficient way to get one’s music performed is to form your own choir and this Timothy Hamilton has done. The thinking behind Cantoribus is to have a group of trained operatic voices giving full vent to their performance. This has been done successfully before with Tenebrae and the BBC Singers. Where this disc comes apart for me is Hamilton’s music. Trained in the cathedral style, he writes as a composer of yesteryear: there is very little of new harmonic or rhythmic interest, and not a lot to stretch these professional performers, who give an exhilarating performance throughout.
