Les affinités entre l’esprit musical germanique et celui du Japon ne cesseront de nous étonner ! Ainsi de ce chef, la cinquantaine glorieuse qui se passionne pour les ½uvres allemandes du XVIIIe siècle. Il choisit ici deux « Messes Luthériennes » d’un certain Jean-Sébastien Bach qu’il dirige suprêmement bien à la tête de son… Bach Collegium « Japan » ! Avec de merveilleux chanteurs prononçant le latin sans heurts, et même avec des accents bien réglés (ag-nus Dei) une prononciation digne de l’Académie et des voix superbes. In an age of magnificent Bach interpreters, Maestro Suzuki’s refined readings glow with quiet author- ity. His trademark luminosity and elegance, persuasive rather than autocratic, encourages sensitive soloists, passionately delicate playing, and a gloriously nimble chorus. There’s significant, arguably inauthentic, acoustic bloom yet the pellucid clarity of the SACD recording defies criticism. With the A major (BWV 234) and F major (BWV 233) Masses appears Marco Giuseppe Peranda’s Missa in A minor, a Kyrie and Gloria from which Bach borrowed and whose example as a contrapuntalist influenced the younger composer.
