Leila Josefowicz is a great champion of the music of John Adams, and perhaps there is an element of her as his muse; her premiere of Adams’ 50-minute Scheherazade 2, with the LSO under the composer, was one of the highlights of the 2016/17 London season.
Here, though, we have the 1993 violin concerto. The quarter-hour first movement of the concerto never seems to let up; Adams avoids crowding the listener through a sense of unstoppable momentum. The second movement is a chaconne, ‘Body through which the dream flows,’ shot through with aching lyricism.
