Anderson’s first foray into the concertante is described as a poem for violin and orchestra, and is assured and ravishingly scored, as one might expect of this composer. Equally assured is the playing of Carolin Widmann, no stranger to contemporary music, and her tone and colour are as well caught in this premiere performance off-stage as on. There is vintage Anderson here as well: The Stations of the Sun of 1998 is a dazzling showpiece; while Alleluia, commissioned for the current performers for the 2007 RFH reopening, puts both choir and orchestra through their paces. …
