Composing in the early 18th century, André Campra was probably overshadowed by his contemporaries Lully and Rameau. Thank good- ness that has changed, as his Requiem is sublime. Campra was known for his sacred music and opera, initiating the art of opera-ballet. At the time, he caused excitement by introducing violins into his sacred music, and the effectively understated scoring of both the Requiem and De profundis includes not only two violins but also two flutes, as well adding a light texture to the score.
