The composer Antonio Cocomazzi grew up in San Giovanni Rotondo, one of the most important spiritual centers in Southern Italy. His family knew Padre Pio and has many intimate memories of the friar’s influence on their lives and from this was born the idea and the need to compose an important work: a Requiem Mass for Padre Pio, on the thirtieth anniversary of the death of him. The first of the work took place in 1999, when Padre Pio was proclaimed “venerable”, and after almost twenty-five years, it can still be considered as one of the high points of Cocomazzi’s production, the result of “spiritual inspiration” . The version proposed in this Da Vinci Classics album is the one prepared by the same author for soloists, choir and organ.
