Quoiqu’il soit aujourd’hui un des compositeurs contemporains les plus joués à travers le monde, l’Estonien Arvo Pärt continue d’entretenir la polémique dans le landerneau musical, ses détracteurs – nombreux – lui reprochant d’écrire depuis 1976 des ½uvres par trop simplistes et de répéter inlassablement des motifs analogues avec une fausse naïveté, la naïveté hypocrite (et dangereuse) des faiseurs et des charlatans. Et de dénoncer en particulier son « style en tintinnabuli », selon l’expression d’Arvo Pärt lui-même. En d’autres termes : un style bâti sur la sonorité minimale……

Like John Tavener, Arvo Pärt often benefits from a drier and more straightforward delivery, and the Latvians approach these works – mostly from the 1990s – in that spirit. The set is dominated by the opening Triodion, the Seven Magnificat-Antiphons, and the more unusual Dopo la vittoria, leaving the title piece to last, effectively enough, but the rest a little awkwardly programmed. No reservations about the performances, which are uniformly excellent, particularly on the storytelling pieces The Woman With the Alabaster Box and Tribute to Caesar. The recording makes good use of the resonant acoustics of St John’s Church in Riga, a beautiful setting for beautiful music. …
