Blue States – Rob Scheps

Rob Scheps returns to SteepleChase with Blue States, a vivid new chapter for the long running Core tet and a striking evolution from his 2019 release Comencio (SCCD 31866). Drawing on the same sharp instincts praised in earlier reviews–his “big toned” authority on tenor and the “loose, inviting allure” of his soprano–Scheps expands his palette here with an unexpected but compelling front line of trumpet, soprano saxophone, and flute. The result is a sound world both airy and electric, shaped by Scheps’ gift for uncovering overlooked gems: music by Shunzo Ohno, Carla Bley, Sam Jones, Ronnie Boykins, and John Abercrombie, all reimagined with the Core tet’s signature clarity and drive. Pianist Jamie Reynolds and bassist David Kingsnorth provide luminous support, while drummer Victor Jones adds fire and finesse. Blue States captures Scheps at a moment of transformation–bold, deeply musical, and unmistakably his own.
