Poet Daniel Schiebeler divided the biblical story of the Israelites wandering in the desert into two parts. In the first the tribe, thoroughly fed-up with their plight, continually moan, to the exasperation of Aaron and the anger of Moses, who warns of God’s anger. God relents and again comes to their rescue, allowing the second part to be a paean of praise coupled with penitence to the Almighty. C.P.E. Bach has set the text to lyrical homophony in a pattern of recitatives and arias interspersed with choruses.
