Christos Hatzis conceives composition as a practice in which technique serves ethical, historical, and metaphysical inquiry. His music is marked by intellectual rigor, stylistic plurality, and a sustained concern with connection—between past and present, body and transcendence, individual experience and collective memory. Tradition, in his work, is not cited nostalgically but reactivated as a functional, living resource. The three works presented here—Zeitgeist (1996), Winter Solstice (2004), and Extreme Unction (2011)—form a coherent trajectory around the idea of threshold. Zeitgeist explores historical simultaneity through stylistic recontextualization; Extreme Unction confronts the liminal space between corporeality and transformation; Winter Solstice extends the inquiry to the civilizational sphere, articulating a passage from fragmentation toward a restrained, hard-won luminosity. Across these works, Hatzis treats musical structure as a site of meaning, where plurality is shaped into coherence and sound becomes a medium of reflection rather than display.
