Following Mendelssohn’s Lieder ohne Worte, the practice of simulating a song for voice and piano on the piano alone established itself successfully. Beyond original works such as Mendelssohn’s, composers took inspiration from actual Lieder and transcribed them for the solo piano. We owe to this practice such masterpieces as Liszt’s transcriptions after Schubert’s Lieder. Here, however, we find something even more special: the piano transcriptions realized by a wife (Clara Wieck Schumann) after the Lieder written by her husband (Robert Schumann).
