“Dear to Us,” the debut album from sisters Hina & Fiona, captures the rare and wonderful connection between two rising violinists in the classical music world. Born in New York to French-Vietnamese and Japanese parents, the gifted sisters have already achieved remarkable individual milestones: Hina recently won first prize at the 2023 International Elmar Oliveira Violin Competition, while Fiona made her debut with the New York Philharmonic at age 16. Both are launching brilliant solo careers.
Their playing together reveals a deep bond, shaped by lifelong collaboration, honest artistic dialogue, and complementary interpretations. Accompanied by the renowned pianist Rohan De Silva, they present a carefully curated program that balances beloved classics with lesser-known gems: works by Johan Halvorsen, Moritz Moszkowski, Eugene Ysaye, Miklos Rozsa, and contemporary composer Anna Clyne are featured.
From the fiery virtuosity of Maurice Ravel’s “Tzigane” and Pablo de Sarasate’s “Navarra” to the delicate warmth of Manuel Ponce’s “Estrellita,” “Dear to Us” is a captivating journey through technical brilliance and deeply felt expression. The sisters’ extraordinary synchronicity, paired with their distinctive voices, creates a musical experience that is both intimate and exhilarating.
