Ignacy Dobrzy?ski (1807-1867) is perhaps best known as a classmate of and influence on Chopin. This twofer presumably aims to set the record straight and present Dobrzy?ski as important in his own right, offering a substantial symphony and an appealing overture plus the piano concerto. Emilian Madey is a fine pianist who here goes head to head against Howard Shelley, caught live on the Chopin Institute’s own NIF label. Shelley, despite his fine pianism, is ruled out of court by an over-reverberant acoustic with little bass focus; Madey, also, is far more aligned with the Polishness of the music, and one becomes aware of links with Weber and Hummel.
