Explorations: Masterclass On Intuitive Music And More At San Quirico – Marcus Stockhausen

Markus Stockhausen is one of the few trumpet soloists who can effortlessly move between contemporary music, classical music and modern jazz. For about 25 years he collaborated closely with his father, the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, who composed many works for him. Markus’s approach to creating “Intuitive Music” transcends all musical styles and takes advantage of his extraordinary mastery of the instrument. One of his earliest recordings with pianist Rainer Brüninghaus (Continuum, ECM) saw him weaving intricate and electrifying melodic lines with trumpet, flugelhorn and trombino. His later work with bassist Gary Peacock and guitarist Ralph Towner; his frequent collaborations with bassist Arild Andersen and percussionist Patrice Héral (Kàrta, Joyosa, Electric Treasures); his numerous collaborations in duo, in particular with Tara Bouman on clarinets; Moving Sounds, with jazz pianist Florian Weber; Inside out (new CD Alba il ECM) with the Hungarian guitar virtuoso Ferenc Snétberger; his new quartet called Quadrivium with cellist Jörg Brinkmann, pianist Angelo Comisso and drummer Christian Thomé; these are all experiences that have all given new perspectives to his sound meditations. As a composer he has received commissions from, among others, the RIAS Chamber Choir, the London Sinfonietta, the Italian String Orchestra, the 12 cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Swiss Jazz Orchestr and the Camerata Bern. In 2013 he composed “Das Herz Erwachende” for solo trumpet, clarinet, voice and symphony orchestra, commissioned and performed by the Hamburger Symphoniker. This CD sees him leading the participants of the masterclass in “Intuitive Music and More” in San Quirico.
