Des « Goyescas » hautes en relief
Graver les Goyescas est un défi que peu de pianistes relèvent de gaieté de c½ur, tant les versions qu’en a laissées Alicia de Larrocha (notamment chez RCA) semblent indétrônables. De nombreux interprètes tombent, du reste, dans le piège consistant à conférer à ces pièces, qui relèvent du salon bien plus que de la feria, des accents andalous ou mauresques hors propos. On aurait tort, pourtant, de comparer le chef-d’½uvre de Granados à Ibéria d’Albéniz. D’aucuns n’hésitent pas même à le jouer comme d’autres dansottent ou se trémoussent dans España……

Ernest Newman memorably described Granados’ Goyescas as giving one ‘the voluptuous sense of passing the fingers through masses of richly coloured jewels… They are piano music of the purest kind.’ Inspired by the 18th-century artist Goya, they celebrate the loves and deaths of the majos and majas (flamboyantly dressed plebeian gallants and their belles). For Granados the maja‘s ‘pink and white cheeks against lace and black velvet, those tight-waisted bodies, hands of jasmine and mother-of-pearl resting on jet trinkets … all of these things dazzled and possessed me’.
