in Choir & Organ (Jan, 2016)
To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Hollins, Lemare and Wolstenholme, Simon Nieminski has put together an attractive selection of music by Hollins and dedicatees of his music, including other neglected names such as Ernest MacMillan and Bernard Johnson. This forgotten era is brought back to life with an authentic air, the American 1930 Kilgen/1947 Moller organ providing an atmosphere perhaps not dissimilar to Free St George’s in Edinburgh, where Hollins presided as church and concert organist. Nieminski brings out a delightful air of the saucy seaside postcard in such irreverent delights as Johnson’s Elfentanz or the Hollins Concert Toccata in B flat. …
