In the early eighteenth century, each musical nation diligently studied the Italian concerto and boldly re-invented it in its own image. The instrumentation and interpretational styles of the various concertos in this programme reflect our detailed study of historical performance practices in Italy, Germany, England and Ireland. More significantly, I hope we have not lacked authentically Italian boldness in exploring new worlds of sound, in recreating the dramatic gestures and Baroque novelty of the Italian concerto.
