Is het ensceneren van de Passies van Bach waanzin of godslasterend? Peter Sellars en Simon Rattle maken er geen spetterend spektakel van maar veel eerder een ritueel, waarbij artiesten zich met hart en ziel uitleveren aan en opgaan in een “gemeenschappelijkheid” van een bijna ondraaglijke schoonheid, die ons naar de keel grijpt en overrompelt.

Here is the ‘Everest of music’ not so much scaled, and certainly not merely admired from a distance, but represented as a sequence of human encounters – support, betrayal, love freely given and sternly exacted, violence – that lead inexorably to a summit of remarkably quiet and untriumphant transcendence.
