Johann Sebastian Bach: Bach Mirrored – Maurizio Croci

The opening and closing tracks neatly demonstrate the title of this disc – the D major organ Prelude & Fugue, and D major harpsichord Toccata – and show what a fine player Maurizio Croci is on both instruments, with an excellent sense of the rhetoric of these multi-section works. The recording of both instruments is excellent, and having the organ G minor Fantasia and harpsichord D minor Chromatic Fantasia on the same disc makes for a fascinating comparison of Bach’s most extreme chromatic writing, although neither the details of the temperament of the organ (restored by Ahrend in 1993) nor the harpsichord are given. …
