A good month for lovers of verismo. Opera Rara has exhumed a delicious rarity, Leoncavallo’s Zazà from 1900, which enjoyed initial success before fading from view. It has an infectious charm, with the composer’s signature style, familiar from Pagliacci, blended with a lighter touch inspired by his time working amidst the café culture of Paris in the 1880s. Maurizio Benini’s conducting reflects this, alternating high drama with delicacy. Ermonela Jaho sings Zazà, a hugely demanding role, and she surmounts every challenge. A favourite of the composer’s, Zaza enjoyed early success among verismo lovers who relished a rich, vibrant score capturing the onstage and backstage highs and lows of the French music hall scene Leoncavallo knew so well. As she previously showed in La traviata (Verona) and Suor Angelica (Royal Opera), Jaho is a fresh, engaging artist who absolutely owns the title role: we need to hear more from her. Redécouverte d’un bel opéra du compositeur de Paillasse
Créé, comme Tosca, en 1900, Zazà est, avec La Bohème, le seul opéra de Leoncavallo que l’on monte de temps en temps, en dehors de son immortel I Pagliacci. Et on le comprend. La musique en est fort inspirée, et l’intrigue est bâtie sur un livret efficace, dû au compositeur lui-même : Zazà, comédienne, tombe amoureuse d’un homme d’affaires, Milio Dufresne. Apprenant que celui-ci est marié et père de famille, elle renonce à son amour. Sur cette trame toute simple, pour une fois sans crimes ni morts, Leoncavallo a composé une partition remarquable, comprenant de nombreux passages dignes d’attention, rythmés par les trois duos entre Zazà et Milio, à l’acte I, plein de charme et de vivacité, à l’acte II, passionné et dramatique, puis à la fin, lors du déchirement final : So che nel mio destino, poignant. Le passage le plus émouvant se situe à l’acte III, lorsque Zazà rencontre Toto, la petite fille de Milio (rôle parlé), et se rend compte du bonheur familial……
