Anthologies are awkward: to rise above the mass requires exquisite programming. They are, perhaps, at their most effective when used to evoke the spirit of place. Both hold true for this disc celebrating the 750th anniversary of Merton College, featuring music from seven centuries including six recorded premieres. This recently formed mixed-voice choir, youthful in both senses, displays fine musicianship, commitment and versatility in repertoire from Dunstaple and Byrd to Stanford and Berkeley. Admirable even on those rare occasions when enthusiasm overmasters technique, they bring emotion untarnished by world-weariness to warhorses like Parry’s There is an old belief.
