I wonder how many organists in the 1970s heard André Isoir’s LPs for Calliope’s Livre d’or de l’orgue français and had their ears opened to a completely new soundworld. Even now, 40 years on, it is impossible not to be thrilled by Isoir’s profound sense of style, his precise and flowing ornamentation and, such as at the end of the Offertoire sur les Grands Jeux from the Mass, an irrepressible, hair-raising momentum. Sorry to say, then, that something has gone wrong with this elegantly presented re-issue.
