A ‘polonicum’, for lutenist Micha? Gondko, is ‘a piece of music with Polish connections’ – not only works by Polish composers, but also those attributed to Polish lutenists, or that use Polish in their title or incipit, or that are simply labelled as such in a source. Thus, this disc – Gondko’s first as a soloist – contains music by both Polish and non-Polish composers from entirely non-Polish sources, showing how widely distributed across the whole of Europe was the idea of ‘Polishness’ at a crucial period in the country’s history.
