On safer ground is La fanciulla del West, filmed in Naples last year, and looking very handsome in Hugo de Ana’s traditional and skilfully lit production. So no surprises here, but a good story told with style. Emily Magee stars as Minnie, and excellent she is, too. Her soprano has warmth and bloom, plus the tensile strength to ride the orchestral peaks. She inspires confidence at all times. Magee also displays a light touch in her portrayal, not as dowdy as some Minnies, and with an underlying sense of humour. Puccini: La Fanciulla Del West – Emily Magee
La Fanciulla del West (Das Mädchen aus dem goldenen Westen, Oper in 3 Akten) (Gesamtaufnahme)
Vorspiel (1. Akt)
Hello! Alla Polka!
Hello… Nick!
Che faranno i vecchi miei
Jim, perchè piangi?
Andiam, ragazzi! Un pò di calma
Un poker? Nick gettoni!
Mistress Rance, fra poco
Hello, Minnie!
Dove eravamo?
La posta! La posta!
Ti voglio bene, Minnie
Minnie, dalla mia casa son partito
Laggiù nel Soledad
Chi c’è per farmi i ricci?
Vi ricordate di me?
Mister Johnson, voi m’avete seccato!
Mister Johnson, un valzer?
Mister Johnson, sietre rimasto indietro
Io non son che una povera fanciulla
Quello che tacete
Il segnale!…
Oh, non temete, nessuno ardirà
Il mio bimbo è grande e piccino (2. Akt)
Billy, è fissato?
Voglio vestirmi tutta
Oh, se sapeste
Ugh!… Neve!
Hello! Chiamano…
Vieni fuori!
Or son sei mesi che mio padre mori
L’han ferito… Che importa?
Che c’è di nuovo, Jack?
E là! E là!… Ah, no… non voglio!
Una partita a poker!
Ve lo giuro, sceriffo (3. Akt)
Maledetto cane!
Ah!… Ah!… Ah!…
Sceriffo Rance!
E così, Mister Johnson, come va?
Risparmiate lo scherno
Ch’ella mi creda libero e lontano
Ah! Ah! Ah!… E Minnie!
Non vi fu mai chi disse “Basta!”
E anche tu lo vorrai, Joe…
Le tue parole sono di Dio
