Premiered in Rome in 1817, this opera has never achieved a hold in even the foothills of the repertoire. It’s not a great piece but it does provide some moments of dramatic tension, and for this production in Pesaro Pier’Alli’s decision to update the piece from the Middle Ages to the Risorgimento does it no harm at all. It looks fine, the action is clear, the video projections aren’t overly tricksy and things move apace. Dmitri Jurowski’s conducting is excellent, full of pace and brio, and at the same time allowing his singers their big moments.
