Contemplating the crucifix in the company of this choir of mixed men, women and children is at once a deep devotional and musical experience. They deliver their repertoire of plainchant and motets by Dunstable, Gombert, Clemens non Papa and Palestrina with a lovely legato, brightly tinted with post-nasal resonance. Recorded in the vast acoustics of the Franciscan Church of Sumeg, their sound covers youthful rawness yet, paradoxically, draws the listener in. There’s a distinct Solemnes influence but, praise be, without the ‘undersinging’ that so badly needs eradicating from monastic chant performance. …
