Schubert: Piano Sonatas Vol. 2 – Martin Helmchen

Martin Helmchen continues his complete recording of Schubert’s piano sonatas, comprising four double albums to be released between now and 2028, the bicentenary of the composer’s death. This volume includes Sonatas D. 568 (1817), D. 845 (1825) and D. 625 (1818), the order of the movements of which ‘remains uncertain’, as Helmchen points out. He has chosen to complete certain movements, drawing inspiration from the eminent pianist Paul Badura-Skoda. The programme concludes with the intense and sombre Sonata in G major D. 894, composed in 1826 and published in 1827 under the title ‘Fantaisie’. Like the rest of the cycle, it was recorded at the Kronberg Academy on a Bösendorfer piano.
