A fascinating release, Maya Homburger has a rich understanding of the sonic subtleties of her instrument and a particular affinity for the nuances of its sound-palette. Rather than simply offering us her version of the Bach solos, she has commissioned a set of works – with her own sound as their starting point – to juxtapose with Bach’s. Barry Guy has written three solos named for butterflies, and this third and final disc features Lysandra, the Adonis blue. The work is both introverted and dramatic, paying gentle homage to Bach with its fugato climax but also investigating extended techniques.
