This curiously proportioned programme (only three of 13 tracks are by the great Estonian) invites us to consider the contemporary maestro alongside Byrd as a supreme craftsman, similarly oppressed by political tensions. It’s very nicely done with the structural details all evident in finely graded interpretations, and listeners not engaged by the fascinating range of compositional tricks and techniques can just let it all wash over them, helped by the indulgent bloom on the recorded sound.
