Emanating from the 2010 Telemann Festival held in his birthplace, Magdeburg, this recording of a work whose very title is unknown beyond specialist circles is noteworthy. Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was more highly regarded than Bach in his lifetime, if not so internationally famous as Handel. Many of his operas, which include (by his account) some 20 written for Leipzig alone near the start of his career, are lost; even the titles are often unrecorded. But some 40 arias from this 1704 work, in its revised version of 1710, sung in a mixture of Italian and German, have been discovered in a Frankfurt library.
