Three very different soundworlds – of Schulhoff, Krenek and d’Indy – form a fascinating programme and a delightful listen. The Hindemith-like rigour and vitality of Schulhoff’s appealing 1927 concerto for flute and piano is no stranger to disc, and has never sounded better. Krenek’s concertino from 1924 is sparer, pitting flute, violin and piano against a smaller string ensemble; so the lush warmth and quirky tunefulness of d’Indy’s Concert is something of a shock, especially as it was written two years later.
