This ten CD anthology of 17th- and 18th-century music of the Habsburg Empire was ten years in the making. Director and violinist Gunar Letzbor takes us on a journey through cities and countries associated with or which were part of the Empire tracing roots and exposing influences which had a bearing on a characteristic Austrian baroque idiom. The journey is a fascinating one even if, on occasion, our credulity is gently tweaked. While most of the great names – Biber, Fux, Schemlzer and co, are featured in the programming, they take their place modestly in a rich, varied and often comparatively obscure context.
