This recording explores the musical world of the laudesi brotherhoods active in the region of Venice around 1500, through a rich repertoire of devotional songs in Italian. Often celebrating the Passion of Christ and the Virgin Mary, these compositions bear witness to an aesthetic deeply rooted in popular fervour, combining homophonic writing, direct expressivity aiming at the community and the influence of Franco-Flemish songs. Inspired by the practice of the musicians of the Scuole Grandi of the Venetian Renaissance, the performers recreate a sound world at the crossroads of spirituality and nascent humanism.
