This latest release on the LSO’s Live label is a passionate, Italianate interpretation befitting a composer whose roots lie in opera. Driven by Italian conductor Gianandrea Noseda and ably assisted by his four Italian soloists, hell and damnation await us around every corner, bisected by moments of quieter introspection. The LS Chorus cope admirably with what is asked of them, but special mention should be made of the LSO itself: over the years I have attended performances by world-class orchestras and conductors, and the skill of the LSO players matches the finest I’ve heard.
