Anna Netrebko makes a long-heralded change of artistic direction with Verismo. The album reflects her move from bel canto works that have largely defined her career (never very convincingly to me) to the spinto repertoire. Netrebko’s voice is now richer, the production smoother, the timbre more even through her range. She sails through her arias with aplomb and delineates character well: her Gioconda sounds desperate, her Wally anguished, her Butterfly resolute. She differentiates well vocally between Turandot and Liù. She is truly involved in Act IV of Manon Lescaut, recorded in its entirety, where she is joined by the stentorian but throaty tenor of her husband, Yusif Eyvazov. Misjudgments are …

Anna Netrebko, Antonio Pappano et le vérisme en musique
Avec « Verismo », Anna Netrebko et Antonio Pappano s’intéressent aux grands airs des fins 19ème siècle, début 20ème. Le terme « vériste » renvoie au mouvement littéraire des années ’70 qui voit un groupe de jeunes poètes et écrivains – autour du roman de Cletto Arrighi, Scapigliatura – se préoccuper des couches sociales, de la réalité, effaçant de fait toute trace mythologique. En musique, s’il n’existe à proprement parlé pas de manifeste, deux ½uvres marquent le début de ce courant : Cavalleria rusticana (Mascagni/1890) et Pagliacci (Leoncavallo/1892), cette dernière……
