Brahms never needed any introduction, as indeed his music has always been seen, after Beethoven’s, as among the most genuine ever produced in the vast romantic milieu of the musical nineteenth century. It is therefore not surprising that countless interpreters we wanted to give their own reading and interpretation, underlining, as it is typical of great masterpieces, sometimes one aspect and sometimes another. Not dissimilar is the approach of the violist Caterina Cioli and the pianist David Boldrini who in this disc dedicated to two great masterpieces of maturity such as the viola sonatas op. 120 decide to portray a vigorous and strong Brahms, now in full control of all their means of expression and are particularly careful to emphasize those numerous shadow areas, of chiaroscuro, which continue to inflame and fascinate the performers of every generation.
