A life for Brahms: Augustin Dumay combines violin concerto and horn trio Augustin Dumay presents a reference recording on his new album, which is completely in the sign of Johannes Brahms: it combines the violin concerto in D major op. 77 with the horn trio E flat major op. 40. For the acclaimed French violinist, this recording marks the culmination of a lifelong connection to Brahms. Already at the age of 13, Dumay played the finale of the concert when he won the First Prize at the Paris Conservatory. Later he received formative impulses from Herbert von Karajan, who praised Dumay’s intuitive sense of the great drama at Brahms. That he has grown up to his 77th year of age to play this masterpiece, gives the interpretation musical maturity and reflected depth. Together with conductor Eliahu Inbal and the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the work becomes an evocative symphonic dialogue between soloist and sonic body. The album is completed by the expressive horn trio op. 40, recorded at Berlin’s Teldex Studio. Together with pianist Frank Braley and horn player David Guerrier, Dumay brings the unique combination of youthful momentum, melancholy and poetic lightness to life.
