Moving into the baroque for something actually recorded in Spain, Juan Bautista Comes: O Pretiosum from the 14 singers of Amystis, heard in many combinations with instruments (organ, harp, viola da gamba, and winds) variously employed to entertaining effect, is a recital of interesting if not particularly original motets and infectiously cheery villancicos celebrating the Blessed Sacrament, including seven recorded premieres. An intimate, soft-edged recording draws the listener in, but the vocal quality is uneven and full understanding frustrated by the absence of translations of the Spanish texts. …
