This series, continuing the rediscovery of late 18th-century Italian organ music, continues with the sonatas of Gaetano Valeri (1764-1822), whose keyboard works are held in the archives of Padua Cathedral where he was organist from 1785. These mostly binary-form sonatas are served well by the two lively historic Italian organs with large stop-lists and a plethora of accessories (drums, tremulants, etc), which Alessandro Perin plays with real empathy, varying the registrations effectively. The galant musical style recalls Rossini: inventive melodies accompanied by Alberti basses, sparkling rhythms and imaginative harmonies, but hardly any contrapuntal development.
