This Da Vinci Classics album collects a number of exquisite songs which were conceived primarily for amateurs, but whose beauty and intensity earns them pride of place within the discographic panorama. Among the featured composers, the Spaniard Antón García Abril was inspired by his homeland’s musical tradition, as is the case with his Preludios de Mirambel. Cécile Chaminade demonstrated her worth as a composer with youthful large-scale works, such as her Piano Sonata op. 21, while later she focused on small-scale miniatures, such as her colourful Arabesque; Chopin’s Nocturne op. 27 no. 1 contrasts with the humorous vein displayed by Francis Poulenc even in his most touching pieces, such as his Intermezzo in A-flat major. Again by Poulenc, Les Soirées de Nazelles evoke for us the pleasant atmosphere of cosy evenings spent with good friends.
