This box presents an exhaustive and complete panorama over Giancarlo Simonacci’s compositional output for solo piano and for four-hand piano duet. It comprises works dating from the composer’s very first years of activity, up to his most recent pieces. The inspirations and suggestions behind each work are detailed by the composer himself, and constitute a kind of a musical journal recalling places (above all, his beloved Sicily), composers (more than one homage to J. S. Bach, but also Monteverdi, Beethoven, Satie, Debussy), pianists (Baglini, Arciuli, Prosseda…), teachers (especially Aldo Clementi) and pupils (the performers, Francesco Negro and Francesco Carletti, but also people who were children many years ago and whose musical attempts have encouraged the composition of small masterpieces which somehow preserve the musical innocence of their first steps), and so on. A special place is reserved for Gabriella, the composer’s wife and his piano duo partner, for whom many works were created. Thus, these two CDs offer us a bright panorama on a life in music, and an insight into what happens in the composer’s workshop.
