Barry Douglas’ conspectus of Brahms solo piano works continues with this well- recorded and well-chosen programme. The Op 39 Waltzes offer plenty of opportunities for the pianist to reveal his or her interior side, and Douglas shows himself as sensitive (the gentle sway of No 4, for example) as well as more outgoing (No 13). The Theme with Variations is better known in its version for string sextet; Douglas gives a strong, muscular reading that fits well with the organ-like gestures and burnished, bass-rich writing.
