Hardly any music by the minor Italian church composer Niccola Monti (1767-1838) survives: in fact, only the two works on this disc, which both here receive their premiere recordings. The brief Miserere, performed to this day as part of the Good Friday procession in Penne, Monti’s birthplace, has been handed down via an oral tradition. The cantata Nelle ore desolate di Maria SS.ma is a substantial composition, though frankly not an inspired one, taking for its theme Mary’s suffering during Christ’s Passion.
