Morton Feldman once said silence was his counterpoint: ‘It’s nothing against something.’ He was a wonderful composer of ‘nothing’ and For Bunita Marcus, like his other long, slow, near-silent late works, employs it to entrancing effect. Ivan Ilić’s enthusiasm for the music (this disc completes his ‘Morton Feldman Trilogy’) perhaps explains the occasional over-excited moment – John Tilbury’s exemplary recording takes nearly 10 minutes longer – as well as his curious decision to split the piece into 22 tracks, so people needn’t listen to the whole work in one sitting.
