Naïve has already brought us Lise de la Salle, a remarkable pianist; now it adds Anna Vinnitskaya. This is Ravel of the highest order. Vinnitskaya’s Pavane pour une infant défunte is exquisitely shaded – and, perhaps surprisingly, it adds a shade of darkness, almost threat, to its mourning. This is a tremendously concentrated performance, intimate in the extreme, and Vinnitskaya’s burnished tone is superbly caught by the Naïve engineers. Cédric Segond-Genovesi’s excellent notes link Noctuelles from Miroirs to Scarbo and Le Gibet. In Vinnitskaya’s hands, Noctuelles is flighty, beautifully thought through and weighted.
