Scarlatti: Keyboard Sonatas – Maria Clementi

Scarlatti’s sonatas have always given rise to many stories and legends, a particularly famous one would like a student to be able to imitate the style of the Neapolitan composer so well that no one would notice, camouflaging it in the midst of the (real) sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757). There are actually so many (555 in the Kirkpatrick Catalog) that few keyboard players can say they know them all. The legend, however, is only legend and the style of the Neapolitan composer was and remains so personal as to be unique and, indeed, inimitable. The pianist and composer Maria Clementi demonstrates that she has analyzed the sonatas presented in this disc with extreme depth, playing them with such adherence to the original text and to the original style, fanfare, fast repetition of the notes, crossing of hands, etc. to propose an execution that for quality and depth of reading is in direct parallel with the harpsichord version, proposing effective solutions to the piano of rare refinement.
