For many years the name of Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was synonymous with music for the Anglican Church. In this role, he expressed a simple but not complacent relationship with the Christian faith; there is much more to his work, however, and he contributed to the revival of late 19th century British music. This record, sung by mezzo-soprano Elisabetta Paglia accompanied on piano by the English Christopher Howell, offers the first complete recordings of operas 30 and 157, the first of the Patriotic Songs and the first for over a century of A Carol of Bells.
