Confused yet? Sacred and secular alto castrato arias by mid 18th-century composer Jommelli are next, recorded by countertenor Filippo Mineccia. The centre of his voice is appreciably lower than Fagioli’s, with a graver tone which occasionally tends to a slight hootiness, but which generally blooms generously. He sings with the early music ensemble Nereydas, conducted by Javier Ulises Illán, and together they explore Jommelli’s rich orchestral textures and colours with obvious delight.
